FAMILY - WHAT DOES THE WORD MEAN TO YOU?

I got this mail and it sure made an impression on me, and I think it is a lesson to all of us, and especially the ones who have kids. Take a moment and read it, it is so, so beautiful and totally true. I have no idea who the author is, but who ever, he is a genius.

Let us know what you think.

F A M I L Y

I ran into a stranger as he passed by,

"Oh excuse me please" was my reply.

He said, "Please excuse me too;

I wasn't watching for you."

We were very polite, this stranger and I.

We went on our way and we said goodbye.

But at home a different story is told,

How we treat our loved ones, young and old.

Later that day, cooking the evening meal,

My son stood beside me very still.

When I turned, I nearly knocked him down.

"Move out of the way," I said with a frown.

He walked away, his little heart broken.

I didn't realize how harshly I'd spoken.

While I lay awake in bed,

God's still small voice came to me and said,

"While dealing with a stranger,

common courtesy you use,

but the family you love, you seem to abuse.

Go and look on the kitchen floor,

You'll find some flowers there by the door.

Those are the flowers he brought for you.

He picked them himself: pink, yellow and blue.

He stood very quietly not to spoil the surprise,

you never saw the tears that filled his little eyes."

By this time, I felt very small,

And now my tears began to fall.

I quietly went and knelt by his bed;

"Wake up, little one, wake up," I said.

"Are these the flowers you picked for me?"

He smiled, "I found 'em, out by the tree.

I picked 'em because they're pretty like you.

I knew you'd like 'em, especially the blue."

I said, "Son, I'm very sorry for the way I acted today;

I shouldn't have yelled at you that way."

He said, "Oh, Mom, that's okay.

I love you anyway."

I said, "Son, I love you too,

and I do like the flowers, especially the blue."

Do you know what the word FAMILY means?

FAMILY = (F)ATHER (A)ND (M)OTHER (I) (L)OVE (Y)OU

This surely touched me, I know I am guilty sometimes, so I thought it would be the ideal post for a Sunday, hope you enjoyed it. Even if there are no sexy legs posted for the day.

Take care!

That was beautiful. It is so true, it is easy to forget to treat your family with respect sometimes but you really shouldn't forget. Thanks for this post, it really touched me.

Nice post. Sometimes we treat strangers better than our own family, which is weird. Thanks for sharing.

This is so true. We even had a talk about this the other day. It works both ways. With the parents or the kids.

Dammit Colin, you almost made me cry on vacation. That was an extremely beautiful post. Sometimes we do need that reminding of what family means!

Hi Colin! It was nice to hear from you on blogger and this is a very nice post :) Yes it's absolutely true that we need to respect those we love - even though sometimes it is a lot easier to treat a passing stranger with less temper. I think yes, we have all been guilty of a bad mood swing or something similar to that....but there's nothing wrong with apologizing and working on bettering yourself. I totally agree with what you wrote here and the email. Thank you for sharing!

what a wonderful story. touching. and yes, there are times that we act better with others than with our family. we got used to their presence that we don't always give appreciation to simple things.

i missed it here colin. nice to be back.

Wow, that is really sweet! And it's true too. We treat strangers so politely (which of course, we should!), but we sometimes forget to treat our family the same way. What a lovely reminder!

This is so beautiful. I love the way they end with the words spelling out FAMILY. I wrote not too long ago about the importance of saying thank you to our loved ones, and even though I think I'm fairly good about this I found many instances where I should have expressed my thanks and didn't. No matter how much love we show we can always do better.
